Make a Straw Platter Fascinator - Summer Camp

Make a straw platter fascinator in summer camp at Weavers Guild.

Your teen can craft an elegant fascinator—a decorative headpiece perfect for weddings, fancy events, or just for fun. Over two afternoons, instructor Abby Langdon will guide students through the process of creating a modern straw platter-style fascinator using traditional millinery techniques. Day one focuses on blocking and shaping the sinamay straw base, while day two covers mounting it onto a wearable headband and adding custom decorative trimmings. This class welcomes teens ages 13 and up with basic hand-sewing experience (though enthusiastic beginners are welcome too). The small group size caps at six students, allowing plenty of hands-on attention. Teens under 18 must be accompanied by a registered adult. The ticket price is $70, plus a $30 materials fee paid directly to the instructor in cash or check at the start of class. Before the first session, Abby will reach out about straw color preferences and the style of trimmings each student wants, ordering materials ahead of time. Students should bring reading glasses for detailed work and an apron if desired.
